What is a sustainable business or organization?

Generally speaking, a sustainable organization seeks to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

For the purposes of the Sustainable Business Directory, a sustainable organization is one that has undertaken a journey to minimize negative impact on the environment and on the community. Each journey will be different, and the rate of progress will be influenced by the unique challenges faced, the resources available, and the level of commitment.

To be included, the organization is asked to provide:

1. A brief aspirational Purpose Statement. There is no specified format but it should reflect the values of the organization within the context of the market or clientele served.

2. A Journey Story that describes details of the path taken. This might include some rationale for beginning the journey, actions and results so far, plans for next steps, and even challenges that threaten additional progress.
